Helliar Holm (or Shapinsay lighthouse)

Under construction

Description c.1900. Small circular tower. Lime-washed, KEEPERS' HOUSES: 2 storeys. Double-ridged roof. Lean-to's at ends. BOUNDARY WALL.

Helliar Holm is an uninhabited island off the coast of Shapinsay in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. It is home to a 42-foot-tall (13 m) lighthouse, which was built in 1893 and automated in 1967.[3] It is a tidal island that used to be connected to Shapinsay. It is still possible to walk across from the mainland during very low tides. The island also has the ruins of a broch, cairn and chapel.[4] In the Orkneyinga Saga it is referred to as both "Hellisey" and "Eller Holm" [5] and John of Fordun refers to it as "Helene-holm" Helliar Holm is an island in Shapinsay Sound between Shapinsay Island and the Orkney Mainland, on the north side of the mainland. It is accessible only by boat. The lighthouse was built in 1893 by David Stevenson and is located on Saeva Ness on the south side of the island, and it is sometimes referred to as the Seava Ness Lighthouse. The 2-storey light keeper's house has be abandoned and allowed to deteriorate. Apparently good views of the lighthouse can be had from the ferry between Kirkwall on Orkney mainland or from Balfour on Shapinsay Island.
